The last judicial flogging in Australia took place in 1958 at Pentridge Gaol, Melbourne, when William John O’Meally was punished for his part in a prison break in which a prison officer by the name of Davis was wounded. Still, he argued, the government should not have ignored rumours of the anticipated march, but banned the parade on the basis of its obvious potential for provoking sectarian tensions in the area.629. . What is of interest is whether any discrepancy comes to light between the vision of expatriate Scots and that of indigenous islanders and highlanders. It was here that a serious fault line had developed in relations between the two ethnic groups in Harbour Grace, with tensions building proportionately to the slide in the local economy as the cod and seal fisheries declined and successive poor growing seasons wreaked havoc with potato crops.
